When it came to furnishing my condo, I quickly discovered that furniture in Toronto is not cheap! There are many stores in this city where you can walk in and easily spend over $10,000 just to furnish a single room! Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be that expensive. There are lots of great places to find items that won’t break the bank.

One thing that I would like to be clear on before listing any places in this article is unfortunately when it comes to shopping for furniture, price often reflects the quality. There are several stores that you can buy things very cheap but the product won’t last more than a few years. My goal with this article is not just to find the cheapest furniture, but list places where you can get the best bang for your buck!

Cheap FurnitureI have spent countless hours going to many of the furniture stores in Toronto and decided to put together a list of some of my favourite furniture shops where you can get the best value. For example, just recently I have been looking to buy a new chair for my den and since I have started I have visited well over 30 different stores! Here are some of my favourite places to look for cheap furniture in Toronto (in order of cheapest to less cheap):

Kijiji / Craigslist – This is where you are going to find the cheapest furniture in Toronto but it involves quite a bit of work! When it comes to used furniture I would stick with only hard goods (ie. tables, chairs, or items that have little to no fabric). The last thing you want is to buy a new sofa and find out it is full of bed bugs or some other kind of infestation. If you do try to look for these things, make sure you are buying them from a clean home. You should be able to tell this easily. One of my best tips for sites like Kijiji & Craigslist is search for store names. This will help you find good quality pieces at a heavily discounted price. If you are looking for things from Ikea, you can even search by the product name and find the item for less than it is in-store. The downside to this approach is you will need to scan through a lot of crap to find the best furniture pieces. Also, don’t forget to haggle a bit on price too if you think the list price is too high!

Ikea (Multiple Locations)- I can’t deny that Ikea is awesome and has some of the best prices on furniture out there. My biggest problem with Ikea though is the quality. I think Ikea is great for students and younger people looking to quickly furnish their first place but not a good place to go if you want furniture that will last many years.

JYSK (Multiple Locations)- I don’t really know much about JYSK but from what I can tell they are very similar to Ikea. Their company is based in Denmark and they claim to be one of the fastest growing retailers in the world! I have never visited their store, but the prices posted online seem very low and extremely reasonable. I have heard some people swear by them but I can’t really say much more than that.

Structube (Multiple Locations)- Structube is one of my favourite furniture stores! They are a step up from Ikea with much better quality, have a modern look and their prices are very reasonable! In my opinion they give the best value for your money when it comes to Toronto furniture stores.

Homesense (Multiple Locations)- While Homesense is more accessory driven, you can find furniture peices here at a discounted price. The downside is the items change all the time so you will need to keep going back to see what they have in stock. For accessories their prices are quite cheap and the quality is good.

The Brick (Multiple Locations)- The Brick lacks when it comes to style, though they do make it up with their pricing. Depending on what you are looking for this can be a good spot to at least take a look.

Leons (Multiple Locations)- Very similar to The Brick, Leons offers very durable unstylish furniture. My biggest complaint with both these stores is they carry products more for homeowners as opposed to someone living in a condo (small space) like myself.

Urban Barn (Multiple Locations)-Urban Barn is a great store for furniture on a budget. Their prices are on the cheaper end of the scale and have both modern and contemporary looks. They offer some customization as well as plenty of home accessories.

G.H. Johnson’s Trading Company Ltd. (Dovercourt) – I found out about this place through Yelp and went for the first time last week. I managed to find a chair for my condo that currently sells at many high-end furniture stores in Toronto for approximately $500 cheaper! They have a huge showroom with lots of great looking peices. I would add this to a must visit when looking for new furniture.

EQ3 (King East & Liberty Village) – EQ3 is a great store to find both modern looks as well as timeless pieces for a very reasonable price. One of the things EQ3 does best is they allow you to customize most of their peices for a cheap price. If you are looking for chairs they have one of the best selections I have found so far!

BLVD Interiors (Queen West) – Located in the Queen West strip of furniture stores, they carry many generic modern furniture items that you will find at many smaller furniture shops. They frequently have floor model sales though so you can occassionally find some nice items at a cheap price.

Decorium (Dufferin & Steeles) – Many of the items I found for my condo, I purchased at Decorium. They have a huge selection of all sorts of styles. Their prices can vary quite a bit, but there are deals to be found. Also check out their clearance section on the lower floor for deals over 50% off!

Shelter (Caledonia & Glencairn – Near Yorkdale) – Shelter has some great looking pieces with a wide range of prices. For cheaper finds check out their clearance section at the back of the store, though the rest of the shop is priced medium-high.

Pavilion (Queen West) – Pavilion offers excellent quality with a great design but their prices are in the higher end of the cheap scale. They do have sales from time to time so you can find some good deals! I just bought a $1700 table for $1000 a few weeks ago during their moving sale.

CB2 (Queen West) – CB2 is the condo version of Crate & Barrel. Their prices are in the mid to high range but the quality is great and there are deals to be found.

West Elm (Liberty Village) – Similar to CB2, West Elm is in the mid to high range. They offer great quality but the prices can get up there! For cheap finds take a look in their clearance section at the back corner of the store.

Casalife (Liberty Village) – Prices at Casalife are similar to CB2 & West Elm but occassionally there are deals to be found. Their style is modern though I feel you get better quality at the previous two stores that I mentioned.

UpCountry (King East) – Prices here can get quite high depending on what you are looking for, but occassionally they have some cheap finds. The quality is quite good and they have some of my favourite pieces when it comes to design.

My goal is to continue to look for more places to add to this list as I find them, so keep checking back! Also if you know any places that you think I should check out please let me know in the comment section below. Thanks!
